What Makes OOH an Eco-Friendly Choice?
In an era where sustainability is a key consideration across all sectors, advertising is no exception. Among the various forms of brand promotion now being evaluated through the lens of environmental responsibility, Out Of Home (OOH) advertising stands out as one of the most eco-friendly solutions.
1. Low Environmental Footprint
OOH relies on long-lasting physical assets (billboards, bus shelters, digital panels). Unlike print or digital ads that often generate short-lived, disposable content, OOH surfaces are reused over time, significantly reducing material consumption.

FAW’s Research: Data That Supports OOH Sustainability
In 2021, Germany’s official OOH association, FAW (Fachverband Außenwerbung e.V.), together with Mediaplus and ClimatePartner, conducted a pioneering study to measure CO₂ emissions per 1,000 advertising impressions across different media channels. This study introduced the “Green GRP” index, evaluating not only advertising reach but also environmental performance.
Results (CO₂ emissions per 1,000 impressions):
- Newspapers (Nordic type): ~9,067 g
- Linear TV: ~828 g
- Online video (e.g., YouTube, VOD): ~284 g
- (Digital) Out-of-Home / DOOH: ~5–80 g
DOOH showed the lowest CO₂ emissions per 1,000 contacts, making it one of the most eco-friendly advertising media available.

Return on Environment (ROE): Where Sustainability Meets Effectiveness
Based on these findings, FAW collaborated with the consulting firm bynd to develop a new index: Return on Environment (ROE). This indicator evaluates how reallocating media budget to low-emission channels impacts both sustainability and campaign performance.
Key findings from media plans (2019–2023):
- Budget shift from TV/Online Video to DOOH led to up to 12% reduction in CO₂
- Campaign effectiveness also improved (brand awareness, consideration, intention)
In a 2024 update analyzing 6 campaigns in the FMCG sector, reallocating budget to OOH/DOOH resulted in up to 29% CO₂ reduction with no negative impact on sales.

FAW highlights three core reasons:
